Lady Alexander Chapter mourns the loss of Sis. Edna Jean Mitchell Gilker

EDNA JEAN MITCHELL GILKER

Sister Jean passed away peacefully at the CHSLD nursing home in New Carlisle, Quebec on Saturday, Feb. 21st 2015, at the age of 96. She was the daughter of the late James Burnes Smith Mitchell and his wife Mary Grant Mitchell.
She was predeceased by her husband Lionel Gilker in 2006 and her only daughter Elizabeth (Betty) Gilker Smith in 2007. She is survived by her granddaughters Crystal Smith and Tracy Smith Booth of Ontario.
Sister Jean was initiated into Lady Alexander #24 on January 20, 1986. She loved the Order of the Eastern Star and looked forward to attending Grand Chapter and joining the choir. She was a dedicated member of her church choir and participated into her late 80's. She was a life member of de Gaspe chapter IODE and a member for 69 years and filled almost every office in that organization including Regent. She had been an active member of the Home and School Association and the 50+ Club of New Carlisle. She delivered Meals on Wheels for many years and gave up that task only when friends convinced her that she should do so for her own safety. That friend also had to promise to continue this service to her community.
There was no service held at this time. A service will be held in the summer of 2015.

“God's finger touched her
and she slipped away
From earth's dark shadow
to a brighter day.”
