Frank H. Tingley #5 Mourns the passing of Sister Sara Gergely

Sara Gergely, 92, of Moncton, New Brunswick, passed away peacefully at the Moncton City Hospital, on Thursday, Sept 1st, 2016 after a short illness. Born in Pecs, Hungary, she was the daughter of the late Miksa and Franciska (Weisz) Szalai. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Sara was a very caring woman, always putting the needs of others before her own. She was a Holocaust Survivor, and came to Canada with her family during the Hungarian Revolution. Sara and her husband, Steve, and their family have been in Moncton since 1957. Sara worked as a seamstress during their early years in Canada, and later as a bookkeeper supporting her husband, Steve, who owned and operated Steve’s Watch & Jewellery Ltd, for nearly fifty years.
Sara is survived by her sons, Peter and Robert (Bev), Moncton; grandchildren, Laura (Andrew) Offman, Toronto, Ontario; Andrew (Aliya Spigelman), Edmonton, Alberta; Erika and Michael, Moncton; four great-grandchildren Henry, Jacob, Levi and Orly; and Laura and Andrew’s mother Marilyn.
She was predeceased by her husband Steve of 61 years, a brother, Jozsef and a daughter Magdolna.
Funeral services were held at Tiferes Israel Synagogue Sept. 2, 2016, with interment following in Tiferes Israel Cemetery, Chartersville, NB. Private shiva will be held in the following week.
